<p>A little trip through the Hill Country is always a good thing, and this holiday season is no exception.  <img src="http://www.texasb-roll.com/images/newsletter/court-house.jpg" width="144" height="95" hspace="8" vspace="8" align="left">In the town of Johnson City, on Hwy 281 north of San Antonio they light up the old Blanco County courthouse on the square with one hundred thousand lights. If you are headed to San Antonio from Dallas this holiday, do yourself a favor and skip I-35.  The drive down 281 South has always been one of our favorites, and you can enjoy this beautiful display of light as well. The entire town is in on the act, with millions of lights, a charming small town holiday with plenty of spirit. </p>

<h1><a name="2" id="2"></a>Not in Texas but pretty dang cool just the same...</h1>
<p>My highly industrious and sometimes whacky brother has a big ol’ houseboat on Lake Chickamauga near Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Each year he decks it out for the holidays and pilots it downstream to Chattanooga’s annual holiday river parade.  This year he went absolutely bonkers with the lights – all timed to music and with a cute dancing girl on top. But don’t worry, she’s dressed! This is family friendly video fare, and pretty impressive! We shipped him a camera, provided a little direction and postproduction and now here it is! Merry Christmas everyone! <br>

Our library is expanding and we have now transitioned to true 1080i High Definition acquisition for all new additions to the library. <p>This weekend’s TexasB-roll Shindig is shaping up to be quite a night in Dallas.  Here’s the latest:</p>
<p>Special guests from area organizations including Texas Motion Picture Alliance, Media Communications Association – International and the Texas Association of Film and Tape Professionals have been invited to give brief updates on their respective activities.</p>
<p><a href="http://hungerbot.com/mardigrascafe.htm">Mardi Gras</a><a href="http://hungerbot.com/mardigrascafe.htm"></a> is an excellent venue for the event, with delicious cajun food (come for dinner!), plenty of well lit parking and friendly staff. It’s a New Orleans style bar and restaurant at the base of the Stemmons Tower buildings on the north bound access road of I-35 between Motor Street and Inwood. This place is a hidden treasure in Dallas, easy to get to, but with little signage. Once you’ve been there, you’ll never forget, and wonder how you didn’t know about it before! This club is supportive of live music in Dallas, and a nice intimate place to see a band.</p>

<p>The latest TexasB-roll stock footage in HD will be on display, courtesy of Videotex Systems.  Will Frome from Videotex will be there to showcase the latest toys for HD acquisition, post production and delivery. </p>
<p>Our TexasB-roll HD demo is being edited in the skilled hands of David Henson, Distilled Images. A big thank you goes to David for his services in making this project happen!</p>

<p>The TexasB-roll.com website has been undergoing a complete redesign by our good friend, and web maestro extraordinaire Clay Meyers, CDM Grafx, San Antonio. Thanks, Clay! It is a huge step into the future for us and we hope you’ll take a look soon.  The new site will be unveiled and on display at the party. This site marks our transition to HD and also to a cooperative agreement with the fine people at motionzonehd.com – Our entire back catalogue of stock footage (more than 200 SD clips!) as well as our new additions in 1080i/24P HD (over 65 clips and growing!) are now available on motionzonehd.com and will all be available as individual clip purchases through the new texasb-roll.com. </p>
<p>Our tradition of including Texas travel information and music news as well as other fun stuff about Texas will continue on the new site. As always we welcome your comments and appreciate your support! </p>

<p>Jerry will tour us through the Channel 8 studios, then will answer your questions about the perils of making the hi-def transition on such a remarkable scale. </p>

As many of you know, our crack editorial staff (me) makes a living as a Director of Photography and Writer / Producer. The last 6 months have been a whirlwind of work related travel, of which I am quite thankful for! (See "Trace Productions News" later in this edition) The newsletter got started at least 3 times, but never "made air."* But now, we're "good to go." We hope you enjoy this expanded edition. Given my overload and until I can teach the field mice to type, this newsletter will now be bi-monthly, and I'll endeavor to keep it on time. The next issue will be released in January. </strong> In March, I was hired, along with sound technician Teddy Hallaron, by <a href="%20http://www.imagesource.tv/">Image Source</a> of Houston for shoots in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and Kosovo, Albania, in the former Yugoslavia. It was an amazing trip to some very interesting parts of the globe. The upcoming documentary profiles civilian employees of KBR, in their support roles to US troops, all around the world. I had the pleasure of traveling and working with Producer Lauren Tompkins, of Image Source (Thanks for the work!) and Teddy to replace another Houston based crew that began the journey in Afghanistan and Iraq. I guess we got the light end of that assignment! It was interesting, to say the least, as our Lufthansa flight to Kuwait took us directly over Baghdad, Iraq. The sun was setting but we could see fires burning below, and it was an eerie site. Kuwait was a strange mix of Islamic culture and western commercialism. Kosovo (Albania) was an interesting, beautiful, but tragic place. We met friendly people all along the trip including many Texans working at the military bases. By the time I returned, though, I was ready for some tex-mex dining, I can tell you that. </font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br>
<strong>10 Years Running</strong><br>
September of 2005 marks 10 years that I have been able to make a living in this industry. In 1995, I left a staff job with CNN to go freelance. It’s certainly had its ups and downs, but I really wouldn’t change any of it, it’s been such a fun ride. I can only say thanks to countless individuals and companies that have sought my services over the years. </font></p>

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> It’s
no joke, cowboy, Kinky is running for Governor of Texas in 2006.
Kinky who? Kinky: country music icon. Kinky: humorist, Texas Monthly
columnist. Kinky: best selling author. Friend to Presidents, rednecks
and derelicts, Kinky Friedman is one of a kind. We’ve been
fans for years, from the first time hearing Kinky’s 1970’s
era hilarious country classics “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven,
and your Buns In the Bed” and “They Don’t Make
Jews Like Jesus Anymore”, to 25 years later reading Kinky’s
excellent murder mystery novels starring, who else, the Kinkster<img src="http://www.site-supporter.net/TexasBRoll/Kinkybw_ex.jpg" width="159" height="115" hspace="7" vspace="5" border="1" align="right">
himself. That’s all funny and cute, but Kinky for Governor?
Don’t laugh, or laugh because it’s going to be so much
fun to watch the campaign. He announced his candidacy in front of
the Alamo, with his trademark cigar and funny but straight talk
about the state. The national media ate it up. The Kinkster is a
serious contender, IF he can get enough petition signatures to put
him on the ballot in 2006. He’s smart, will stand up for what
he believes, and is far enough outside the mainstream to appeal
independents, liberals and conservatives, tired of the status quo
in politics. He’s strong on education, energy independence,
and personal freedoms. <br>
Remember, people laughed at the thought of Sonny Bono as a congressman,
Jesse Ventura as Minnesota Governor, and now, Arnold as “the
Governator” in California. Kinky Friedman has at least as
much credibility as those guys! And he’s a heck of a lot more

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In
the interest of equal time, as this newsletter is not a political
forum, we commend current Governor Rick Perry for seeking more funding
to encourage filmmaking in Texas. This is an important issue in
a time when there is stiff competition to lure filmmakers to many
states, and other countries. This is from the <a href="http://www.statesman.com/search/content/shared/tx/legislature/stories/01/26perry.html%20">Austin
American statesman article</a>: "Perry's budget also calls for the
creation of a $30 million incentive fund for making films in Texas.
Perry aides said inquiries to the Texas Film Commission have fallen
25 percent in the past two years as other states have given incentives
to filmmakers. "This is something that was here and is now being
lured away to other states," said Mike Morrissey, Perry's director
of budget, planning and policy."</font></p>

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Bloodrock's
"D.O.A." spooked us in the seventies, coming out of a tiny transistor
radio in the middle of a moonless night. It's definitely in the
top five of scariest rock songs ever, and one of the most unlikely
radio hits. This was early heavy metal before people knew what to
call it. Parents hated it. We (10 year-old dreamers) thought it
was great! Skip ahead a few years and the manic boogie rock of Nitzinger,
with Bugs Henderson on guitar knocked us off our musical feet. They
poured jet fuel on the flames of old school boogie and blues. It
turns out that these bands were kindred Texas spirits from Fort
Worth. John Nitzinger wrote several songs recorded by Bloodrock
in their six album run from 1969 to 1972. Now it is so many years
later and they're all going to spark it up again in Fort Worth with
Jon Dillon, longtime rock radio DJ as emcee of the festivities.
This should be a rock show for the ages featuring original members
of Bloodrock plus a Nitzinger Reunion, featuring Bugs Henderson.

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">As
everyone has seen by now, the images from Indonesia and Sri Lanka
are unbelievable, some say "biblical" in proportions. The loss of
life and devastation are hard to comprehend and reveal that most
of our frustrations at daily life here are trivial. Getting cut
off on the highway, late for an appointment, trouble making the
mortgage payment… all are put in perspective next to scenes of villages
now nonexistent and people who had next to nothing who now have
less than nothing. As throughout history, our nation of "ugly Americans"
is stepping up to the plate to help. Here in Texas, there are countless
organizations raising money, devoting time and resources to help
those half-way around the globe. On January 9th, Willie Nelson headlined
a concert in Austin for Tsunami relief. Other acts on the bill included
great Texas musicians Joe Ely, Patti Griffin, Alejandro Escovedo,
and more. Now a CD and DVD are being made of the show with proceeds
going to the cause. Check the website below for links to reputable
charitable organizations that are providing relief to Tsunami victims
plus information on the Nelson project. </font></p>

<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">At
the end of the Texas Revolution, at the famous battle of San Jacinto,
the victorious "Texians" were said to have chanted "Remember Goliad!"
as well as "Remember the Alamo!" and for good reason. It was at
the Presidio La Bahia, a fort established near Goliad, Texas that
the first Declaration of Texas Independence was signed in 1835.
It was also there, in 1836 that the darkest day of the war came.
On Palm Sunday, Col. James Walker Fannin and 341 men under his command
were executed a week after their capture at the Battle of Coleto,
under orders of the Mexican dictator, General Santa Anna. There
was twice as much loss of life at Goliad than at the Alamo. As grim
news reached the United States, volunteers streamed forth for the
people of Texas who were engaged in a war with a dictator who took
no prisoners - a war of extermination. This one single event, the
Goliad Massacre, more than any event in the Texas Revolution, proved
to the people of the United States what manner of warfare confronted
the Texans. <br>
Today, Goliad is one of the few places in North America where you
can visit both an 18th century Spanish-Colonial mission and presidio
(fort) complex, to understand the roles of the Catholic Church and
the Spanish military in settling the New World. <br>
Presidio La Bahia underwent a restoration in the late 1960's and
is certainly one of Texas' most significant historical landmarks.
However, funding has been limited in recent years and much work
is needed to again restore and maintain these historic structures.
We encourage you to visit these sites and donate if you can. Discover
your Texas heritage. Support these landmarks; they are our links
to the past.</font></p>

and vocalist Patrick Rogers hosts two jam sessions weekly that are
bringing out some amazing players on the scene to sit in. It's a
blues based format with forays into funk, jazz and rock-n-roll.
The core band consists of Patrick with a rotation of 2 great rhythm
sections - Drummers Brian "H-Bomb" Ferguson (also plays with Chris
Ruest) and Lavelle Jones (touring drummer for Lucky Peterson), and
bassists Mike Bealle (also plays with original rock band Thinking
Room) and John Echols (session player). Each week a variety of musicians
show up to jam with the above house bands and you can too! Just
see Patrick when you come in and put your name on the list. Everyone
gets a chance. For non-musicians, these are great (no cover ever)
ways to get out mid-week, enjoy some good live music and check out
the variety of talented musicians that reside here. You never know
who might show up. Here's where it all happens:</font></p>

hand for the jams and there's ample seating area if you're just
there to hear the music.<br>

The Forum</strong><br>
This is a great neighborhood bar that deserves more recognition
in the Dallas area club scene. Located in the Shops at Promenade
Center in Richardson, The Forum has been here for many years but
never had live music until now - Patrick and the boys host the jam
here on Thursdays and it's a blast. The first time I went there,
3 people said hi to me as I came in! It just feels like a home away
from home. Owner Mischelle, bartender Carol (hey I remembered her
name! inside joke…) and waitress Stacy are genuine, fine folks who
really care about their clientele. Each week, Mischelle puts out
a home cooked dish for a free buffet if you are hungry and the band
starts early (7PM). So if you have an early call on a Friday morning
shoot, you can still enjoy some live music and get home at a decent
hour. These folks really do it up right. As many of you know, I
love to sing, and this is one of my favorite spots to do it. So,
come on out if you need a little wind down time after work, sit
in and play, or just enjoy. You won't be disappointed.<br>

Ornaments Help Preserve State Capital</strong></font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Here’s
a neat Texas addition for your Christmas tree - ornaments designed
as miniature replicas of the gates leading into the Texas State
Capital grounds. This and some other very “Texas” ornament
designs are available online from the Texas Capital gift shop. The
State Preservation Board operates the shop and all proceeds go into
preserving the Capital building and its grounds. The Texas State
Capital in Austin was designated a National Historic Landmark in
1986 for its "significant contribution to American history,"
and is an impressive example of late 19th century public architecture.

Each year DE/F2 has grown in prominence and success, attracting
a young, sophisticated and entrepreneurial audience of over 12,000
people to nightclubs, juke joints, art galleries and theaters that
line the streets of Deep Ellum. The 2004 festival will honor such
luminaries in the business as Robert Duvall, Todd Wagner, Allison

– Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Delbert McClinton,
Bo Diddley, many more.</strong></font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The
First Annual Rocking Beaumont Blues Festival will take place Saturday,
October 30, and Sunday, October 31, 2004, in downtown Beaumont.
The goal is to provide blues music from three independent stages
throughout the day. Stage performances, games, arts activities,
food, art vendors, craft vendors, and informal jam sessions will
provide an abundance of activities for festival-goers.</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">"The
influence of blues music is detectable in so many genres of today's
music. Its evolvement has been instrumental in much of what is heard
on the radio today. The fact that southeast Texas has reared some
the industry's greatest contributors and with no major blues festivals
in the region, the concept of a festival to celebrate this rich
tradition is potentially enormous," said Regina Lindsey, Executive
Director for the Southeast Texas Arts Council.</font></p>

blacked-out front window and simple sign atop the Mexicali Café,
tucked away in a Dallas forgotten strip mall, give no indication
of the world of taste within. Inside, The Mexicali is warm and friendly,
not fancy, just good like home. I moved to Dallas in 1989 from San
Antonio and for years lamented the fact that Dallas, being home
to many great restaurants of immense variety, lacked an essential
element, the great Tex-Mex diner. I discovered The Mexicali a few
years back, purely by accident. I heard someone mention it - then
happened to spot it set back in a parking lot on Northwest Highway,
just west of Jupiter Road. I went inside, and was floored - Texas
Tornados playing on the speaker overhead, a delectable plate of
cheese enchiladas in front of me, warm flour tortillas on the side,
and a cold Tecate - hell, I thought I'd gone back home. The food
is simply excellent from the enchiladas, tacos and chile rellenos,
all the way down to the perfectly cooked beans and rice, and chile
con queso with a touch of cayenne - its heaven on an oval platter.<br>
I've been back many times since and never had a bad experience.
From the attentive wait staff to the family smiles at the front
door, to the outstanding fare at reasonable prices, this place wins
all around.</font></p>

Leo Kottke at The Granada Theatre, Dallas. </strong><br>
Great news for live music lovers in Dallas! The folks that own CD
World (our local favorite) have bought the old Granada Theatre on
lower Greenville Avenue and have outfitted it to bring in touring
music artists. This is great for our city as we have been sorely
lacking in mid sized venues for acts to play. Since the demise of
the Bronco Bowl and Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, and aside from
the Gypsy Tea Room, there have been few places for many touring
acts to play. They have already had some outstanding shows at the
Granada and September brings more. A Wilco show is already sold
out. This listing caught me by surprise - Leo Kottke? Wow - the
guy was a legend in the '70s, a virtuoso folk guitarist, Kottke
recorded some amazing albums - haven't heard much about him since,
except for his many appearances on Garrison Keillor's radio show
"A Prairie Home Companion." Here he is playing in my hometown on
a Wednesday night! It should be interesting…<br>
A big TexasB-roll.com salute goes to CD World for seizing the Granada
and bringing some great talent back to the neighborhood.</font></p>

Two bands I'd really like to see; I have heard good things about
both acts for many years. Patrice Pike is a singer, songwriter,
Producer who has garnered much acclaim in the Texas music press
in recent years. The Asylum Street Spankers are known to be a unique,
highly entertaining, ten piece band that plays jazz, swing and country.
I can't make it down to Austin to see this one, but I wish I could!!

22nd, went off without a hitch. I thank all of my clients, friends
and colleagues for making it such a memorable night. We had a great
time. If you weren't there, just assume we were talking about you!</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks
to all the musicians who performed:<br>

Kevin Lewis - guitar, Sharda Brody - vocals, keyboards, Clay Meyers
- drums, Craig "El-Groovo" Bowker - bass, Jason Meyers - guitar,
Becca Linekin - backing vocals. The live band never had a full rehearsal
before this gig. We had one afternoon jam with the rhythm section
and sent songs back and forth through the mail and Internet. These
pros took the CDs, learned the tunes and then pulled it off live!
Sure, we were a bit rough around the edges (mostly me!), but the
crowd was appreciative and we had a blast. Hats off to Patrick and
the boys.<br>
