Texas B-roll Rides Again

Readers: Thank you for staying on the list during a newsletter drought! As many of you know, our crack editorial staff (me) makes a living as a Director of Photography and Writer / Producer. The last 6 months have been a whirlwind of work related travel, of which I am quite thankful for! (See "Trace Productions News" later in this edition) The newsletter got started at least 3 times, but never "made air."* But now, we're "good to go." We hope you enjoy this expanded edition. Given my overload and until I can teach the field mice to type, this newsletter will now be bi-monthly, and I'll endeavor to keep it on time. The next issue will be released in January. Occasionally, we will send a short update in the off month, but you'll never receive more than two emails a month from this list, and never one morsel of SPAM.
Your suggestions for content are always appreciated!
Send to: newsletter@texasb-roll.com.
Thanks! - Trace

*If you despise us now and really want off the list, simply follow the remove link at the bottom of this email, and you're "outta here", no questions asked.

Now that's what I call Good Eatin'

When its lunch time in Texas, do we want to eat veggies and drink Evian by the pool? Nope, we want some "conditioned air", while bellied up to a big plate of ribs and brisket, washing it down with a cool brew followed by a nap! If only we had the time… There are some big chain operations that lay down decent barbecue, but the true experience comes from enjoying the hand-prepared goodness found in smaller, family owned places across the state. This site will put you on the right track for a central Texas road trip - http://www.texasbbqtrail.com/. The Texas BBQ Trail takes you to some classic stops North, East and South of Austin in the towns of Round Rock, Luling, Lockhart, Taylor and Elgin, Texas. Of course, this opens it up for us to recommend some of our personal favorites - Main Street BBQ in Euless and Raymond's BBQ in Dallas. If you have a favorite barbecue joint, send us a review for our semi-regular feature "Looking Through the Hole In the Wall." Past newsletters have featured reviews from Dallas and Corpus Christi. Those articles can be found in the newsletter archives at: www.TexasB-roll.com

Travel
In March, I was hired, along with sound technician Teddy Hallaron, by Image Source of Houston for shoots in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and Kosovo, Albania, in the former Yugoslavia. It was an amazing trip to some very interesting parts of the globe. The upcoming documentary profiles civilian employees of KBR, in their support roles to US troops, all around the world. I had the pleasure of traveling and working with Producer Lauren Tompkins, of Image Source (Thanks for the work!) and Teddy to replace another Houston based crew that began the journey in Afghanistan and Iraq. I guess we got the light end of that assignment! It was interesting, to say the least, as our Lufthansa flight to Kuwait took us directly over Baghdad, Iraq. The sun was setting but we could see fires burning below, and it was an eerie site. Kuwait was a strange mix of Islamic culture and western commercialism. Kosovo (Albania) was an interesting, beautiful, but tragic place. We met friendly people all along the trip including many Texans working at the military bases. By the time I returned, though, I was ready for some tex-mex dining, I can tell you that.

10 Years Running
September of 2005 marks 10 years that I have been able to make a living in this industry. In 1995, I left a staff job with CNN to go freelance. It’s certainly had its ups and downs, but I really wouldn’t change any of it, it’s been such a fun ride. I can only say thanks to countless individuals and companies that have sought my services over the years.

In particular, I thank these fine individuals for their friendship and support in helping to keep me from getting a “real job”:
John and June Ready, Clay Meyers, Max Warren, Greg Coon, Bob Humphrey, Joe and Debbie Cantu, Jay Stowers, Orion Linekin, Pat Broyles, Dale and Linda Hancock, David Henson, Kurt Lang, Lisa Hampshire, Austin Anderson, Michael Kitkoski, and Jason Snyder.

This leads to an announcement!
