Looking
through the Hole In the Wall

The
blacked-out front window and simple sign atop the Mexicali Café,
tucked away in a Dallas forgotten strip mall, give no indication
of the world of taste within. Inside, The Mexicali is warm and friendly,
not fancy, just good like home. I moved to Dallas in 1989 from San
Antonio and for years lamented the fact that Dallas, being home
to many great restaurants of immense variety, lacked an essential
element, the great Tex-Mex diner. I discovered The Mexicali a few
years back, purely by accident. I heard someone mention it - then
happened to spot it set back in a parking lot on Northwest Highway,
just west of Jupiter Road. I went inside, and was floored - Texas
Tornados playing on the speaker overhead, a delectable plate of
cheese enchiladas in front of me, warm flour tortillas on the side,
and a cold Tecate - hell, I thought I'd gone back home. The food
is simply excellent from the enchiladas, tacos and chile rellenos,
all the way down to the perfectly cooked beans and rice, and chile
con queso with a touch of cayenne - its heaven on an oval platter.
I've been back many times since and never had a bad experience.
From the attentive wait staff to the family smiles at the front
door, to the outstanding fare at reasonable prices, this place wins
all around.

is a great idea, practical knowledge for aspiring Production Assistants
- From the official press release: If you are a college student
studying film, or a recent grad looking to break into the film and
video business, this is the workshop for you. Four top industry
professionals, all who regularly hire production assistants here
in Dallas, and one working PA, will discuss the most important skills
and qualities you need to be the best production assistant on every
kind of shoot. Panelists include: Janis Burklund, Director, Dallas
Film Commission, and Lynne Moon, award-winning Art Director and
Stylist, Moondrops.
Registration
will be limited to 30 participants. $20 registration fee for non-members
of Women in Film.Dallas. $5 for members.

Leo Kottke at The Granada Theatre, Dallas.
Great news for live music lovers in Dallas! The folks that own CD
World (our local favorite) have bought the old Granada Theatre on
lower Greenville Avenue and have outfitted it to bring in touring
music artists. This is great for our city as we have been sorely
lacking in mid sized venues for acts to play. Since the demise of
the Bronco Bowl and Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, and aside from
the Gypsy Tea Room, there have been few places for many touring
acts to play. They have already had some outstanding shows at the
Granada and September brings more. A Wilco show is already sold
out. This listing caught me by surprise - Leo Kottke? Wow - the
guy was a legend in the '70s, a virtuoso folk guitarist, Kottke
recorded some amazing albums - haven't heard much about him since,
except for his many appearances on Garrison Keillor's radio show
"A Prairie Home Companion." Here he is playing in my hometown on
a Wednesday night! It should be interesting…

and bringing some great talent back to the neighborhood.

Patrice Pike
The Asylum Street Spankers at The Saxon Pub, Austin.
Two bands I'd really like to see; I have heard good things about
both acts for many years. Patrice Pike is a singer, songwriter,
Producer who has garnered much acclaim in the Texas music press
in recent years. The Asylum Street Spankers are known to be a unique,
highly entertaining, ten piece band that plays jazz, swing and country.
I can't make it down to Austin to see this one, but I wish I could!!

Shindig! News
Our
first annual Trace Productions / TexasB-roll.com Shindig!, August
22nd, went off without a hitch. I thank all of my clients, friends
and colleagues for making it such a memorable night. We had a great
time. If you weren't there, just assume we were talking about you!
Thanks
to all the musicians who performed:
Patrick Rogers - guitar, vocals, Joe "Sparky" Montoya - keyboards,
Mike Beall - Bass, "H-Bomb" Ferguson - Drums
And our special guests for the evening:
Kevin Lewis - guitar, Sharda Brody - vocals, keyboards, Clay Meyers
- drums, Craig "El-Groovo" Bowker - bass, Jason Meyers - guitar,
Becca Linekin - backing vocals. The live band never had a full rehearsal
before this gig. We had one afternoon jam with the rhythm section
and sent songs back and forth through the mail and Internet. These
pros took the CDs, learned the tunes and then pulled it off live!
Sure, we were a bit rough around the edges (mostly me!), but the
crowd was appreciative and we had a blast. Hats off to Patrick and
the boys.

plan is to do it all again (even bigger?!!?) next year when I'll
be celebrating 10 years as a freelancer in Texas. I promise plenty
more fun! … and more rehearsal time for me with the band!! YOU should
definitely plan on another great time with food, music and good
friends. The 2nd Annual Shindig will be August of 2005. Stay tuned…
